Alsarah is a singer, writer and ethnomusicologist born in Khartoum, the capital city of Sudan. She spent the first 8 years of her life there, thereafter having to flee the political regime and settling with her family in Yemen. In 1994, following the outbreak of civil war in her adoptive country, she travelled to the United States and settled there permanently. 
Her musical education began at the age of 12. She began her studies at the Pioneery Valley Performing Arts Charter in Hadley, and then studied music and ethnomusicology for four years at Wesleyan University.
Currently based in Brooklyn, New York, she is considered the new pillar of East African retro-pop. 
In recent years, Alsarah has multiplied collaborations, namely with the "Nile Project", for which she sand on their first album "Aswan" (ranked first in the top 5 albums not to be missed in 2013 by NPR Magazine).
More recently, she met French producer Débruit and was invited to collaborate with him on the album "Aljwal", released on Soundway Records.
In Spring 2014, accompanied by her musicians, she released her first album "SILT" under the name of Alsarah & The Nubatones, followed by "Manara" in September 2016. 
A charismatic and independent writer, composer and ethnomusicologist, the new standard of East African retro-pop, Alsarah is part of this generation of atypical artists who draws precious influences from her origins that she then blends with those that punctuate her daily life.
Named "the star of Nubian pop" by the prestigious Guardian magazine, Sudanese singer Alsarah, now based in Brooklyn after a stint in Yemen and Cairo, gracefully distills timeless melodies on a groove backdrop, at the crossroad of oriental and North-African influences, and calls into question the links between Egypt and Sudan. 
Based in Brooklyn, it is undoubtedly the ambient frenzy, the multiculturalism and the incessant tingling of this city that, consciously or not, guides Alsarah and her musicians in their search for that perfect balance between urban culture, modernity and traditional reminiscences. 
Inspired by both the golden age of 1970s pop in Sudan and New York's bustle, Alsarah and The Nubatones have built a repretoire in which a supercharged oud overflowing with electrified melodies blends with refined jazz-soul bass lines, and incisive percussions with modern beats give new breath to age-old rhythms. 
The influence of artists as varied as the charismatic Zanzibar taarab legend Bi Ki Dude, or the iconoclastic Grace Jones, lends to the voices of Alsarah and her sister Nahid an incredible vocal richness, and allows for great aesthetic differences while maintaining a deep consistency throughout.
