Thomas Sankara (1949-1987) was a Burkinabé military captain, Marxist revolutionary, pan-Africanist and President of Burkina Faso from 1983 to 1987, whose charisma, ambitious social and economic programmes, struggle against corruption and French colonial power, gained him widespread popular support. He was overthrown and assassinated in a coup d'état on 15 October 1987.
Thirty years later, he continues to be referred to as "Africa's Che Guevara".
