On October 16, 2006, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and Plantu, cartoonist at Le Monde newspaper, brought together at the UN headquarters in New York twelve of the world’s most celebrated cartoonists for a symposium entitled “Unlearning Intolerance.” It is from this that sprang the movement Cartooning for Peace.

In order to strengthen this movement, the Swiss foundation Cartooning for Peace was created in 2009 by cartoonists Chappatte and Plantu, and former UN in Geneva spokesperson Marie Heuzé. The Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United Nations in Geneva support the foundation.
