Alternating energetic sarabandes and haunting reveries, DakhaBrakha – whose name means “give/take” in Ukrainian – defines its style as “ethnic chaos.” Nothing war-like about it but a festive and cultural ambition that flows from the Dnieper River across the continents. He wears a black tunic, they all long white dresses, rich necklaces and high hats, fantasy versions of Cossack caps. While the sharp polyphonies of the singers are rooted in ancestral authenticity, the rhythms and instruments (cello, djembe, accordion, keyboard…) enter to merge landmarks and borders and create trances borrowed from the East, Africa, India as well as the Balkans. .
